IF THE FLORIST | Fabulous flowers delivered to Bellevue Hill today!
Bellevue Hill is an affluent residential suburb located five kilometres east of Sydney`s central business district, in the Eastern Suburbs. The suburb is found between Double Bay to the west, and Rose Bay to the east. Point Piper is Bellevue Hill`s only northern neighbouring suburb. Bellevue Hill`s homes are among the most prestigious in Sydney, due in part to the suburb`s elevated topography, which affords it sweeping views of Sydney Harbour, Sydney CBD and the surrounding Eastern Suburbs.
In the early 1800s, early Irish-Australian immigrants referred to the area that makes up Bellevue Hill today as Vinegar Hill, in honour of a battle of the same name that occurred in Ireland in 1798. Eager to disassociate the suburb with an Irish uprising, Governor Lachlan Macquarie settled on the name Bellevue Hill - Belle vue meaning "beautiful view" in French. In the latter half of the 19th century, the suburb became home to many of Sydney`s wealthiest and most influential residents (a trend which continues today). A number of sprawling estates and grand mansions were built in Bellevue Hill and many are heritage-listed today, examples of which include: Rona, Ginahgulla, Rovello, Trahlee, and Caerleon, all found on Ginahgulla Road; and Villa d`Este, Bonnington, and Wirian, all of which are located on Victoria Road.
Cooper Park is found in Bellevue Hill`s south. While small in size, the park`s deep gully, lush rainforest canopy and trickling stream afford it a tranquil and secluded ambiance that very much so lends it the air of an urban oasis. The suburb features a small village-style shopping strip on Bellevue Road, near the Victoria Road intersection. A more comprehensive array of services and amenities are found in neighbouring Double Bay.
