The greater Bondi area includes three suburbs: Bondi; Bondi Beach; and North Bondi. The three suburbs share one postcode and are often interchangeably referred to as Bondi. The three Bondi suburbs are located seven kilometres east of Sydney`s central business district, in the Eastern Suburbs. Home to the world-famous Bondi Beach, Bondi is also a thriving commercial hub, with a generous array of trendy restaurants, bars and boutiques lining its many buzzing high streets.
Bondi derives its name from an Aboriginal word boondi, meaning "water breaking over rocks". Following European settlement, the land surrounding and including Bondi Beach was privately owned up until 1882, when the Municipal Council declared Bondi Beach a public beach. The Bondi area was largely working class for much of the 20th century, but developed into a more coveted residential district in the 1990s. In recent decades, Bondi`s wining and dining offerings have improved substantially; with the area now considered a destination in its own right, irrespective of its namesake beach.
Bondi`s major hotspots radiate around the suburb`s one-kilometre-long flagship beach, the most popular of which include: Bondi Road, in the suburb of Bondi, to the south; Hall Street, Gould Street and Campbell Parade, in the suburb of Bondi Beach, adjacent to the beach`s foreshore; and Campbell Parade, near where it meets Military Road, in North Bondi. Some of Bondi`s most iconic dining and drinking venues include Icebergs, Bondi Trattoria, Sean`s and North Bondi Fish.
