Chifley is a small residential suburb located 13 kilometres southeast of Sydney`s central business district. The suburb is within easy reach of Malabar Beach, Yarra Bay and La Perouse`s most popular recreational spots. Chifley is surrounded by three neighbouring suburbs: Matraville, to the north and the west; Malabar, to the east; and Little Bay, to the south.
Following European settlement, the first home built in the area that makes up Chifley today was Bunnerong House, which was completed in 1825. The suburb developed as a residential area in the 1930s during the Depression. Originally a part of southern Matraville, Chifley was declared its own suburb in 1964 and was named in honour of Ben Chifley, Australia`s prime minister at the end of WWII.
Matraville Sports High School and Chifley Public School are found in Chifley`s northeast, not far from Malabar Beach, which is found a short walk away further east. Chifley Sports Reserve is located in the suburb`s southwest, and while Chifley doesn`t feature a retail high street, a wide range of stores and amenities are found in neighbouring Matraville on Bunnerong Road. The beaches, restaurants and historical sites at La Perouse are not far from the south of Chifley.
