Clovelly is a beachside suburb located eight kilometres southeast of Sydney`s central business district, in the Eastern Suburbs. The suburb is sandwiched between Bronte, to the north, and Coogee, to the south. Clovelly is much loved for its relaxed atmosphere and stunning views across the Pacific Ocean. Clovelly Beach and the long narrow bay that reaches it, are rather unique among Sydney`s other beachside suburbs. An extensive concrete foreshore surrounds the bay, providing expansive spaces to sunbathe and ample entry points into the water.
Formerly known as Little Coogee, Clovelly adopted its current name in 1913. The suburb is named after one of the area`s earliest estates, which in turn, was named after the village of Clovelly on the north Devon coast in England. Clovelly developed into a residential area in the early 20th century. The concrete foreshores surrounding Clovelly Bay were constructed during the Great Depression as part of a local scheme to provide work for the unemployed and to allow bathers easier access to the water.
The Clovelly Hotel is found adjacent to Clovelly Beach, as are the Clovelly Ocean Pool and the Clovelly Life Saving Club. Clovelly Bowling & Recreation Club, Burrows Park Sports field and Shark Point are found on the suburb`s elevated northern headland, with all three commanding panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.
