IF THE FLORIST | Fabulous flowers delivered to Darlinghurst today!
Darlinghurst is a cosmopolitan inner-city suburb located one kilometre east of Sydney`s central business district, in the Eastern Suburbs. The densely populated suburb is made up of a number of buzzing precincts, some of which include: Victoria Street, a wining and dining high street which connects the suburb to neighbouring Potts Point; Stanley Street, best known as Little Italy; and Crown Street, renowned for its vintage fashion boutiques and retro vibe. The Darlinghurst end of Oxford Street is well known as the centre of Sydney`s GLBTI community, and plays host to the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras each year.
Darlinghurst, like nearby Darling Point, was named in honour of Elizabeth Darling, the popular wife of Governor Ralph Darling, during the early 19th century. For much of the 20th century, Darlinghurst was a slum and red-light district, but has undergone rapid urban renewal since the 1980s, resulting in the lively and coveted suburb that exists today. In June 1978, a gay rights march and a night-time celebration organised by the Gay Solidarity Group took place on Oxford Street. This grassroots event is now known as the first Sydney Mardi Gras, with the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras having been held on Oxford Street annually ever since. In 1981, it was decided to hold Mardi Gras in February each year going forward, so that it could be celebrated in the warmer months.
Oxford Street and Taylors Square are found in Darlinghurst`s southwest. Despite the recent years of lockout laws, Oxford Street remains as one of Sydney`s main nightclub "strips". Victoria Street is found in Darlinghurst`s central portion and features a wide selection of trendy restaurants, bars and pubs. The Australian Museum is Australia`s oldest museum and is found in the suburb`s northwest, adjacent to Hyde Park, and nearby to Darlinghurst`s Little Italy precinct.
