Double Bay is a harbourside suburb located four kilometres east of Sydney's central business district, in the Eastern Suburbs. Sitting on a large "double" bay between Darling Point and Point Piper, the suburb is best known for its generous array of upmarket hair and beauty salons, as well as fashion boutiques, wine bars and restaurants.
In the early years of European settlement, Double Bay was a farming area. A number of cattle and lettuce farms were established in the early 19th century in the valleys extending into present-day Woollahra, Bondi Junction, Bellevue Hill and Point Piper. The suburb is named after the bay on which it sits, which features a small protrusion at its midpoint, near Point Piper, affording the bay two distinct halves.
Double Bay's commercial hub radiates around New South Head Road, Bay Street and Cross Street and features a wide variety of hair and beauty businesses, cafes and restaurants. The Intercontinental Double Bay is found on Cross Street and is home to Saké Restaurant & Bar, Lotus Double Bay and a gorgeous rooftop pool. Double Bay ferry wharf is found adjacent to the 18 Footers League, Steyne Park and Double Bay Beach.
