Eastlakes is a residential and recreational suburb located eight kilometres south of Sydney`s central business district. The suburb is surrounded by some of Sydney`s most prestigious golf clubs: The Australian Golf Club, north adjacent in neighbouring Kensington; and Bonnie Doon Golf Club, east adjacent in neighbouring Pagewood. Eastlakes is also home to Eastlake Golf Club and The Lakes Golf Club. Both golf courses surround the Botany Dams, which lend the suburb its name.
Eastlakes takes its name from the extensive lake system that exists in the suburb`s southeast, and the suburb`s location within the Eastern Suburbs. The lakes were once part of a more extensive wetland known as Botany Swamps, which were later partially reclaimed to create land for the Lakes Golf Club and Sydney Airport extensions. The former swamps were Sydney`s third source of fresh water, with water being pumped to a reservoir in Paddington in the 1850s.
Eastlake Golf Club is found in the suburb`s northeast and is accessed at 65 Gardeners Road, Daceyville; The Lakes Golf Club is located in Eastlakes` southern portion and partially extends into neighbouring Pagewood. Both golf courses sit on the tranquil Botany Dams. Eastlakes Shopping Centre is found in the suburb`s north and features a variety of food retailers including Woolworths, Aldi and a gourmet deli.
