IF THE FLORIST | Fabulous flowers delivered to Kensington today!
Kensington is an inner-city suburb located six kilometres southeast of Sydney`s central business district, in the Eastern Suburbs. Largely a residential suburb, Kensington is also home to the University of New South Wales (UNSW), the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and the prestigious Australian Golf Club. Kensington is found to the south of Moore Park and Centennial Park, and immediately west of Royal Randwick Racecourse.
Following European settlement, the area that constitutes Kensington today was originally an industrial area, with residential land grants made in the late 1880s. The suburb was named after London`s well-heeled Kensington neighbourhood. Kensington Racecourse opened in 1893, but was never a competitor to nearby Randwick Racecourse, instead being devoted to midweek meetings, pony racing and polo matches. The land on which the racecourse sat was resumed in 1950 to provide a site for Sydney`s second university - the University of New South Wales.
UNSW and NIDA are found in Kensington`s southeast, both fronting on to Anzac Parade, which is the suburb`s primary thoroughfare and commercial high street. The Australian Golf Club is located in the suburb`s southwest, but is accessed from neighbouring Rosebery. Raleigh Park is a leafy residential apartment and townhouse complex found in Kensington`s north, overlooking Moore Park Golf Course.
