IF THE FLORIST | Fabulous flowers delivered to Malabar today!
Malabar is an oceanside suburb located 12 kilometres southeast of Sydney`s central business district, in the Eastern Suburbs. The suburb`s northern portion is almost entirely open green space, with Malabar Headland National Park found buffering the suburb`s northern coastline. Southern Malabar is a residential area, and is also home to Randwick Golf Club and Long Bay Correctional Complex.
The area that constitutes Malabar today was historically used by local Indigenous people as a principal camping and healing ground when travelling between Port Jackson and Botany Bay. Following European settlement, the area was known as Long Bay - taking its name from the relatively elongated bay that culminates at Malabar Beach. In 1931, the MV Malabar, named after the Malabar region of the Indian state of Kerala, was shipwrecked in thick fog on the suburb`s northern headland. Following a petition by local residents, Malabar was adopted as the suburb`s new name in 1933.
Malabar Beach is found in the suburb`s centre, adjacent to Dacre Street and Fishermans Road. Malabar Headland National Park is located in the suburb`s northern portion and features a number of walking trails and lookout points. Randwick Golf Club is found in the suburb`s south and enjoys sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean.
