Maroubra is an expansive beachside suburb located 10 kilometres southeast of Sydney's central business district, in the Eastern Suburbs. The suburb stretches from its namesake beach in the east to its western border adjacent to Westfield Eastgardens, with Anzac Parade providing Maroubra with its primary thoroughfare through the approximate centre of the suburb.
Maroubra is a local Aboriginal word, meaning "place of thunder". Following European settlement, the suburb was first used as a site for wool scouring works in the 1870s. A tramline was extended to Maroubra Junction in 1912, and at the same time, the suburb was subdivided for residential development. The Olympia Motor Speedway opened in Maroubra in 1925, but was closed after only nine years of operation due to a number of fatalities that occurred on its dangerous concrete track - Coral Sea Park, named after the Battle of the Coral Sea, exists today on the speedway's former site.
Maroubra Beach is found in the suburb's southeast, and a selection of cafes, restaurants and bars overlook its northern end from McKeon Street and Marine Parade. The suburb's northern headland is the site of Jack Vanny Reserve, which enjoys a panoramic vista out across the Pacific Ocean. Mahon Pool - an oceanside saltwater swimming pool - is accessed through the reserve from Marine Parade.
