IF THE FLORIST | Fabulous flowers delivered to Marrickville today!
Marrickville is an expansive residential and commercial suburb located seven kilometres southwest of Sydney`s central business district, in the Inner West. Marrickville is a culturally diverse and thriving suburb made up of low and high-density residential, commercial and light industrial areas.
The Gagidal or Cadigal people of the Eora Nation were the first inhabitants of the Marrickville area, having lived there for tens of thousands of years. Their connection continues today. The suburb is named after one of the area`s earliest European landholdings - the `Marrick` estate of Thomas Chalder, established in 1855. Marrickville became a municipality in 1861, its first school and post office opened in 1864 and 1865 respectively, and a railway line to Bankstown commenced operation in 1895. The suburb was a working-class area for much of the 20th century but in recent decades has transformed into a trendy and bohemian suburb.
Marrickville today has a multicultural and relatively youthful population, thanks in part to its proximity to some of Sydney`s largest universities. The suburb is awash with trendy bars and numerous "foodie" eateries. A number of specialty breweries are found in the suburb`s east near Wicks Park, some of which include: Batch Brewing Company; Philter Brewing; and Stockade Brew Co Barrel Room. A variety of parks are spread throughout the suburb. Mackey Park, Steel Park, HJ Mahoney Memorial Park and Marrickville Golf Club are all located on the banks of the Cooks River, in the suburb`s southwest.
