Matraville is a large residential and light industrial suburb located nine kilometres southeast of Sydney`s central business district, in the Eastern Suburbs. The suburb is found between Maroubra to the north, and Phillip Bay to the south. Matraville`s nearest beaches are Malabar Beach, Maroubra Beach and Yarra Bay Beach.
Matraville is named after James Matra, an American diplomat and sailor, who worked as a midshipman on Captain Cook`s voyage to Botany Bay in 1770. The suburb was initially reserved for the Church and Schools Corporation, and then developed into a residential area for returned soldiers following WWI from 1918 to 1925. Housing development in the area increased further, particularly in the 1970s. Matraville is steeped in ANZAC history, with many of its streets named after the battlefields of WWI.
Barwon Park is found in Matraville`s centre, on Franklin Street, not far from Bunnerong Road, which serves as the suburb`s main shopping high street. The La Perouse Pony Club and Bunnerong Equestrian Park are found in the suburb`s south, as is the expansive Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park. Yarra Bay Beach is within a stone`s throw of Matraville`s southwestern border.
