IF THE FLORIST | Fabulous flowers delivered to Newtown today!
Newtown is a vibrant suburb located four kilometres southwest of Sydney`s central business district, in the Inner West. Newtown`s iconic King Street is the suburb`s commercial and recreational centre, with a seemingly endless array of restaurants, pubs, bars and boutiques found along its sidewalks. Newtown is a dynamic and multicultural suburb, thanks in part to its proximity to the University of Sydney, which is found in neighbouring Camperdown.
The area that makes up Newtown today was established as a residential and farming district in the early 19th century. The suburb takes its name from Newtown House, which was built in the area in the 1830s. Newtown was originally a relatively affluent and prosperous suburb, which is evident in the lavish Victorian mansions that still exist in pockets of the suburb. In the early 20th century though, the suburb became increasingly run down and working class, like other inner-city suburbs, as wealthy residents moved to newer and more prestigious areas. In recent decades, Newtown has experienced a gradual process of urban renewal and is now considered a trendy and coveted suburb.
King Street`s trajectory roughly follows the suburb`s L-shaped layout; and some of the street`s best known pubs include: The Bank Hotel; The Newtown Hotel; and The Marlborough Hotel. King Street is also jam-packed with restaurants, cocktail bars, vintage boutiques and an array of other retailers. Camperdown Memorial Rest Park is Newtown`s largest green space and is found in the suburb`s north.
