IF THE FLORIST | Fabulous flowers delivered to Paddington today!
Paddington is an inner-city suburb located three kilometres east of Sydney`s central business district, in the Eastern Suburbs. Colloquially known as "Paddo", the suburb is best known for its iconic and historic terrace houses, many of which today are heritage-listed and renovated. Paddington also enjoys a thriving cafe culture and nightlife, and is home to an array of Australian fashion boutiques.
Following European settlement, the first land grant in the area that makes up Paddington today was made in 1823 to Robert Cooper, James Underwood and Francis Ewen Forbes. When Underwood subdivided his land in 1839, he named his subdivision the Paddington Estate after the London Borough of the same name. With the construction of the Victoria Barracks in 1841, the village of Paddington soon emerged and rapidly developed as a residential district throughout the 19th century. During this time, the majority of Paddington`s iconic terrace houses and workers` cottages were built. In the early 20th century, the suburb decayed into a slum, especially during the Great Depression, but thankfully has experienced a gradual process of gentrification since the 1960s.
The intersection of Glenmore Road and Oxford Street, opposite the Victoria Barracks, is home to an array of upscale Australian fashion boutiques and a selection of trendy cafes. The suburb also features shopping and dining strips on Oxford Street, William Street, and at Five Ways on Glenmore Road. Some of Paddington`s most popular pubs include the Light Brigade, the Four in Hand, the London Hotel, the Paddo Inn and the Royal Hotel.
