Randwick is a dynamic residential and commercial suburb located six kilometres southeast of Sydney`s central business district, in the Eastern Suburbs. Found between Centennial Park and Coogee Beach, Randwick features a plethora of vibrant dining districts and retail high streets. The suburb is home to Royal Randwick Racecourse, as well as the Prince of Wales hospital complex.
The suburb was named after the village of Randwick in Gloucestershire, England - the birthplace of Simeon Henry Pearce, who became the Mayor of Randwick six times over the course of his life. The suburb began to develop as a residential area in the latter half of the 19th century, with a number of its grand Victorian homes still standing today and heritage-listed. Royal Randwick Racecourse opened in 1833 and is today considered Sydney`s most prestigious horse racing venue. The Australian Turf Club owns the racecourse.
The suburb`s largest dining and shopping hubs are centred around: Royal Randwick Shopping Centre, on Belmore Road; and the Ritz Cinemas, near the intersection of St Pauls Street and Perouse Road. The Prince of Wales Hospital complex is found to the west of these two hubs, not far from the University of New South Wales. Royal Randwick Racecourse and Randwick Environment Park are found in the suburb`s northwest and southeast respectively.
