IF THE FLORIST | Fabulous flowers delivered to Redfern today!
Redfern is an inner-city suburb located three kilometres south of Sydney`s central business district. The suburb is found between Surry Hills to the north, and Waterloo to the south. Moore Park Oval and Moore Park Golf Course are east adjacent to Redfern. In recent years, the suburb has been the subject of gentrification and is currently going through a process of urban renewal.
The suburb is named after surgeon William Redfern, one of the area`s earliest European settlers. Redfern railway station opened in 1855 and in 1859, Redfern was incorporated as a borough. Redfern Park was designed and constructed during the 1880s as a Victorian pleasure garden. Redfern Oval was developed into a professional rugby ground in the 1940s and significantly upgraded in 2009. In the 1960s and 1970s, an Aboriginal power movement, centred around Aboriginal Australian migrants to the city, formed and resulted in the creation of housing co-operatives, food drives, health clinics and a legal aid centre in Redfern.
Redfern Park and Redfern Oval are found in the suburb`s centre, with Redfern Oval adjacent to neighbouring Waterloo. The suburb`s primary high streets are Redfern Street and Regent Street, both nearby to Redfern Station; and Cleveland Street, in the suburb`s north and shared with neighbouring Surry Hills. `The Block` is a residential area important to the Aboriginal community, and is found west adjacent to Redfern Station.
