IF THE FLORIST | Fabulous flowers delivered to Rockdale today!
Rockdale is a residential and commercial suburb located 13 kilometres south of Sydney`s central business district, in the St George area of southern Sydney. The suburb is found between Bexley, to the west, and Brighton-Le-Sands, to the east, affording Rockdale convenient proximity to Botany Bay and Sydney Airport.
The area that makes up Rockdale today was first known by European settlers as Frog Hollow or White Gum Flat, and later as West Botany. Mrs Mary Ann Geeves, the suburb’s first postmistress, suggested the name Rockdale in 1878. It is believed that the suburb`s name was inspired by Rocky Point Road, which had been constructed in part by Geeves` husband, Yeoman Geeves. Rockdale Station, on the new Illawarra rail line, opened in 1884, and residential development of the suburb followed shortly after. Rockdale was proclaimed a municipality in 1888.
Rockdale`s primary shopping strip is found on the Princes Highway, on the eastern side of Rockdale Station. Rockdale Plaza Shopping Centre is also found on the Princes Highway, in the suburb`s southern reaches. The suburb`s green spaces are concentrated in the east, with Rockdale Park found on West Botany Street, and Rockdale Bicentennial Park located on President Avenue.
