IF THE FLORIST | Fabulous flowers delivered to Sydney CBD today!
The Sydney Central Business District is Sydney`s primary commercial and business hub, and is also the city`s historical centre. The CBD is aesthetically distinct for its towering office blocks and skyscrapers, which are found adjacent to Sydney Harbour, the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Harbour Bridge. The CBD extends three kilometres from Sydney Cove in the north, to Haymarket in the south, and is also home to the iconic Sydney Opera House.
Following a short stay in Botany Bay, the First Fleet established a settlement at Sydney Cove (present-day Circular Quay) on 26 January 1788. This became the first permanent European settlement in Australia, and was strategically chosen for its: fresh water supply; deep and safe harbour waters; and proximity to agriculturally viable land. In the coming centuries, Sydney grew from this spot, first as the centre of a colony, then as a city, and later as a central business district. Like many city centres throughout the world, Sydney CBD became increasingly aesthetically defined by office towers and skyscrapers in the latter half of the 20th century. At 309 metres, Centrepoint Tower is Sydney CBD`s tallest structure, and was topped out in 1981. In 2016, height limits for buildings were increased from 235 metres to 310 metres.
Sydney CBD contains a number of unique localities within its folds, some of which include: The Rocks, a historical district found adjacent to Circular Quay and the Sydney Harbour Bridge; The Royal Botanic Gardens, located between the Opera House and Woolloomooloo; Haymarket, best known as Sydney`s China Town, found at the southern end of the CBD; and Barangaroo, the CBD`s newly developed entertainment precinct.
