IF THE FLORIST | Fabulous flowers delivered to Vaucluse today!
Vaucluse is a harbourside suburb located nine kilometres northeast of Sydney`s central business district, in the Eastern Suburbs. Renowned for its coveted waterside real estate, harbour beaches and leafy avenues, Vaucluse is one of Sydney`s most affluent suburbs. The suburb enjoys an extensive shoreline on Sydney Harbour, as well as a clifftop coastline overlooking the Pacific Ocean on its eastern side.
Before European settlement, Vaucluse was primarily inhabited by the Birrabirragal Aboriginal clan. Residential development in the suburb commenced in the early 19th century. Macquarie Lighthouse was constructed in 1816 and still stands today, next to Christison Park. Vaucluse House, from which the suburb takes its name, began construction in 1803, with final expansions completed in 1839. The house was named after the Fontaine-de-Vaucluse estate near Avignon in France.
The opulent Vaucluse House exists today, in near perfect condition, as a historic house museum replete with beautifully landscaped grounds, and is found near the harbourside Vaucluse Park. The suburb`s most popular beaches include: Milk Beach; Shark Beach, at Nielsen Park; and Parsley Bay Beach. All of Vaucluse`s beaches are harbourside; the Pacific Ocean is inaccessible on the suburb`s eastern side due to the elevated topography.
