Waterloo is an inner-city suburb located three kilometres south of Sydney`s central business district. The suburb is found between Redfern to the north, and Zetland to the south. Traditionally a working class suburb, Waterloo has experienced a degree of urban renewal and transformation during recent years due to its convenient inner-city location.
The suburb is named after the Battle of Waterloo - a British and Prussian military victory over France, which took place in 1815. In the 1820s, Waterloo developed into an industrial district with a number of mills and factories operating in the area. And while the suburb has historically been a working-class area, since the early 2000s, the region has undergone some degree of gentrification. A rising technology business district exists in Waterloo today, as well as a significant number of recently developed residential apartment complexes. The suburb features a notable GLBTI population thanks to its proximity to Surry Hills and Darlinghurst.
A number of restaurants, retail outlets and businesses are dotted throughout the suburb, with Danks Street notable as Waterloo`s primary high street. Moore Park Golf Course and the Supa Centa are found adjacent to Waterloo`s eastern boundary. Fernside Skatepark is located next to Waterloo Oval, in the suburb`s southwest.
