Waverley is a residential suburb located seven kilometres east of Sydney`s central business district, in the Eastern Suburbs. Found between Queens Park and Bronte, Waverley enjoys proximity to the Eastern Suburbs` most popular beaches, Bondi Junction and the greater Centennial Parklands. The suburb`s commercial hub is found on Bronte Road and at Charing Cross.
Waverley House was built near Old South Head Road in 1827 and was named after the book Waverley, by author Sir Walter Scott. The house was a notable landmark in the area, and the suburb was subsequently named after it when proclaimed a municipality in 1859. Waverley Cemetery, situated in nearby present-day Bronte, was established in 1877 and is one of Australia`s most famous cemeteries due to its cliff-side location, which commands magnificent views across the Pacific Ocean.
Waverley Park is north adjacent to the suburb and is found opposite Waverley College. The suburb`s commercial high street is based on Bronte Road, largely between Charing Cross and Bronte Road`s intersection with Albion Street. Queens Park is found west adjacent to Carrington Road. Waverley is home to St Catherine`s School and Waverley College.
