Woollahra is a residential suburb located five kilometres east of Sydney`s central business district, in the Eastern Suburbs. The suburb is well known for its lush tree-lined residential streets, well-preserved historical housing stock and its village-style shopping high street. Woollahra is found between Centennial Park and Bondi Junction to the south, and Double Bay and Bellevue Hill to the north.
Woollahra is an Aboriginal word meaning "meeting ground", "camp", or "a sitting down place". The suburb`s name was chosen by Daniel Cooper, the first speaker of the legislative assembly of New South Wales, when laying the foundations of Woollahra House in 1856. Cooper and his descendants were influential in the establishment and development of the suburb. Woollahra is notable for its abundance of heritage-listed homes, with many well-preserved terrace houses, Federation Queen Anne homes and Georgian dwellings dotted throughout the suburb.
Woollahra`s village-style shopping strip is primarily based on Queen Street, and features an array of cafes, restaurants, pubs, boutiques and a high concentration of art galleries. Some of the suburb`s best-known pubs include the Woollahra Hotel, the Hotel Centennial, and the Lord Dudley Hotel. Cooper Park is partially located in Woollahra`s eastern portion, adjacent to Bellevue Hill.
