Woolloomooloo is a harbourside inner-city suburb located 1.5 kilometres east of Sydney`s central business district, in the Eastern Suburbs. Found between the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Domain to the west, and Potts Point to the east, the suburb is best known for its iconic Finger Wharf, which at 400 metres in length, is the longest timbered-piled wharf in the world.
Woolloomooloo is thought to derive its name from the Aboriginal words Wallamullah, meaning "place of plenty" or Wallabahmullah, meaning a "young black kangaroo". The suburb`s iconic Finger Wharf was constructed between 1911 and 1915 with the purpose of bringing order to Sydney Harbour`s foreshore facilities. The wharf`s usage declined during the 1970s when other more modern wharves began to supersede it, and by 1987 it lay derelict and on the precipice of demolition. Thankfully, locals campaigned for the Finger Wharf to be saved and protected, and it was subsequently renovated in the 1990s. Today, the iconic Finger Wharf contains 300 residential apartments, a boutique hotel and several fine dining restaurants.
The Finger Wharf is found at 6 Cowper Wharf Road and today features some of Sydney`s most esteemed fine dining establishments including Otto Ristorante, China Doll and Kingsleys Woolloomooloo. The wharf`s spectacular hollowed out interior also features an Ovolo Hotel, as well as internal cocktail bar. On dry land, Woolloomooloo`s Tilbury Hotel is located on Nicholson Street, not far from Cowper Wharf Road.
