IF THE FLORIST | Fabulous flowers delivered to Zetland today!
Zetland is an inner-eastern suburb located four kilometres south of Sydney`s central business district. The suburb is found between Kensington to the east, and Alexandria to the west. Zetland has traditionally been an industrial area, but in recent years, has rapidly developed as a residential district as well. The suburb forms part of the new Green Square precinct.
The suburb is named after Thomas Dundas, 2nd Early of Zetland, who was a friend of Sir Hercules Robinson, Governor of New South Wales from 1872 to 1879. Zetland is an archaic spelling of Shetland. The suburb originally featured a natural wetlands area, which was drained in the early 1900s to create the Victoria Park racecourse. The racecourse subsequently closed shortly after WWII. For much of the 20th century, Zetland was primarily an industrial area. The suburb became a subject of a broader urban renewal project in the mid-1990s, which has seen the rapid development of residential complexes in Zetland, as well as the Green Square precinct.
A number of small parks lie in central Zetland; Matron Ruby Grant Park is found adjacent to the newly opened Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre in the suburb`s south, on Zetland Avenue. The East Village Shopping Centre is located in Zetland`s northeast, adjacent to neighbouring Kensington and opposite the Supa Centa Moore Park.
